FCL means Full Container Load while LCL means Less than Container Load. Choosing between FCL and LCL depends on your specific needs. Think about your shipment size, budget, and urgency. Whether you’re sending a full load or just a few boxes, understanding these options will help you make the right choice for your shipment to Singapore.

Difference

FCL (Full Container Load): You rent an entire container just for your goods. It’s like booking a whole room for yourself. LCL (Less than Container Load): You share container space with other shipments. Think of it as sharing a room with friends.

When to Choose FCL or LCL?

Consider three factors: Volume, security and speed. If you have enough goods to fill a container or want to avoid sharing space, FCL is your go-to. If your goods are the only ones in the container, choose FCL to reduce the risk of damage or mix-ups. As for the speed, FCL shipments are often faster since they don’t need to be consolidated with other goods.

Generally, we more consider the two factors for choosing LCL: Cost and flexibility. If your shipment is small, LCL can save you money because you only pay for the space you use. LCL is greater for smaller shipments that don’t require a full container.

Consider 5 Factors When Making A Decision

The volume of goods, budget, urgency, type of goods and frequency of shipping: More goods might mean FCL while fewer goods might mean LCL; FCL is generally more expensive, but LCL can have additional handling fees; If time is critical, FCL might be quicker while LCL can take longer due to consolidation and deconsolidation processes; Fragile or high-value items might be safer in an FCL than LCL; Regular shipments might benefit from FCL contracts.

Calculating Sea Freight

In an FCL shipment, we need to calculate the cost per container typically. Consider the size (20ft or 40ft) and route. In an LCL shipment, the cost calculation is generally based on the volume (cubic meters) or weight of your goods. Additional fees may apply for handling and consolidation.
